Member Spotlight:
Kathy Madsen

Kathy Madsen is Merrimac Farm Master Naturalist Chapter's Co-President serving in this role alongside Judy Gallagher. Kathy has served as Chapter President for several years and has been a long-term active member of the chapter. In 2009, Kathy graduated in the second Virginia Master Naturalist program class hosted by Merrimac Farm Chapter!

Kathy became a certified Virginia Master Naturalist in 2010. She has maintained her certification by serving a minimum of 40 hours annually since then.

Kathy has been instrumental in keeping the chapter vibrant and growing. She has enjoyed meeting new trainees, and has helped guide chapter members toward achieving certification as Virginia Master Naturalists.

Kathy just finished assisting with the latest cadre of trainees. Ten enthusiastic and dedicated individuals transitioned from trainee to members of Merrimac Farm chapter. Kathy states, "It is rewarding to observe their growth and watch them get involved actively in our community."

Along with Prince William Conservation Alliance members, Kathy has volunteered to clear and plant the Wildlife Native Plant Garden behind the Stone House at Merrimac Farm located at Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area. Whenever possible, Kathy attends maintenance workdays to keep up the garden, and increase her knowledge about native plants.

Kathy has also been active for several years with eMammal, a citizen science, data management for camera trapping research projects. The data collected in eMammal is used by scientists in their research of mammal patterns and behaviors. While participating in this project in 2016, Kathy was involved with documenting black bears and a bobcat on a property in The Plains, VA. Below, Kathy shares a photo of a coyote captured via camera trapping for eMammal.
